How to Answer Behavioral Interview Questions



Behavioral interview questions search candidates’ skills and professional qualities. It gauges how well candidates utilize these competencies.

When the company asks behavioral interview questions, the company is only judging either the person has the particular skills required for the job or not. They question the skills of the interviewee. These questions are much focused and you have to be alert and prepared while answering them. They might ask about special situations that you have been handling in the past and which are related to their post as well.

These questions are a challenge to your ability and it is your den how to prove yourself the most right candidate. They check that if you are put into a similar situation, what you would do to cope with it. With Critical Behavior Interviewing (CBI) approach, it is rightly assumed that ‘the most accurate predictor of future performance is past performance in a similar situation’. The competencies are pre-determined through such interviewing. With behavioral interview questions, your behavior patterns are being judged.

The correct answer is not as important as the right one! These are hypothetical questions. You have to be well prepared for such questions while embark on the way to success.

Sample Behavioral Job Interview Question

Here are a few sample behavioral job interview questions:

  • Narrate an occasion where you used logic to solve a problem.
  • Explain the logic
  • Give an example of a goal you reached and
  • How you achieved the goal.
  • Was there ever a goal you didn’t achieve
  •  Then how you handled it.
  • Describe a stressful situation at work and how you coped with it.
  • Give an example when you were faced with a situation about dishonesty. How did you deal it?
  • Tell me what are you under pressure?
  • What can you do when faced with a challenge?
  • Have you ever analyzed any information? What did you think before it and how did you reason it? Give example.
  • Have you ever made a presentation? What was the topic? Was it difficult? How did you handle it?
  • What do you do when there is not much work to do?
  • What about the mistakes you make and how do you handle it?
  • Describe a risky decision that you took?
  • Have you ever made any recommendations? Give examples.
  •  Why did you take that decision?
  • How do you handle risky situations? Give an example.
  • Have you ever thought creatively or innovatively? When and how?
  • What were the outcomes?
  • Have you ever dealt with company policy that did not agree with your policies? How?
  • Have you ever worked on multiple projects? What were your priorities?
  • What do you do when priorities change quickly? How did you manage it? Give an example.
  • How do you meet deadlines?
  • How you set goals and achieve them, give an example.
  • Have your goals ever gone wrong? Why?
  • Was there ever a project started as a result of your efforts? What was your role in it? Did it succeed?
  • What about changes in your schedule? How do you deal it?
  • Have you ever thrilled an uninterested lot to do a particular work? How did you do it?
  • Give an example when you motivated certain co-workers.
  • What are you in team work? Give example.
  • How did you handle a difficult situation with a co-worker?
  • Do you accept what others say? Give an example when you did not.
  • Have you handled a difficult situation with a supervisor, another department, a client or vendor? How?
  • What about disagreements with boss? Give some examples.
  • Narrate an example when you had to use confrontation skills.

For young interviewees, it is suggested that examples from college or university life be quoted. Never say that you don’t have experience with such situations. All the best for your interview and job!
